California Basic Skills Completion Practices to Increase Student Success

"This document is intended to be a practical resource guide for faculty, administrators, and staff to use as they develop, modify, and adapt data-supported and scalable programs and projects on their campuses. These programs include orientation, helping students learn to help themselves, classroom interventions, and course redesigns. Each year, the 112 California Community Colleges receive supplemental Basic Skills Initiative funding. Our hope is that this resource will help our colleges research, plan and implement programs and practices that will assist their students. This resource is neither a research paper nor a thought piece. It is also not a step-by-step “how to.” Instead, the resource is a guide to assist colleges in developing and implementing action plans for using their Basic Skills Initiative funds and any other available funding to increase student success. We encourage colleges to use these funds to institutionalize successful programs and practices and we discourage colleges’ use to implement new pilot programs that cannot be scaled up or sustained long term."

 

Updated Annotated Bibliography of Postsecondary Peer Cooperative Learning Programs Available

As part of my research, I maintain an annotated bibliography on the five major postsecondary peer cooperative learning programs: Emerging Scholars Program (ESP, Treisman Model), Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL, City College New York), Structured Leanring Assistance (SLA, Ferris College Model), Supplemental Instruction (SI, UMKC Model), and Video-based Supplemental Instruction (VSI, UMKC Model). I released an earlier version in 2005 and placed it in the online ERIC Database maintained by the Department of Education. Since then, I have added nearly 100 pages of new annotated references for these five programs. The most citations continue to be SI, however as a percentage basis the PLTL model is growing more quickly in the professional literature.

Current and former leaders of the field of developmental education and learning assistance have issued a strategic review of the field and provided recommendations for its improvement. The report is available from the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) website, http://blueribboncommission.org At the same website is a link to a web-based discussion forum for public comment and conversation of the report and the issues that are raised.
